Palidrome or oops?
The name palindrome comes from the Greek words 'again' (palin) and 'to run' (drom). Can you think of some more words that are the same backwards and forwards?
According to others, Mark Twain tells a story about how "Yreka" got it name.
A small town Bakery used paint on a blue biece of cloth to post a sign to attract hungry travelers during their drive north or south on I-5. The town is in Siskiyou County just as you enter California from Oregon.
If you were driving North, just past Mysterious Mt. Shasta and the town of Weed, you could see the blue sign and it read "Bakery".
If you were headed South on I-5, you saw Yreka" due to the post blocking the B.
Funny story, when I sold high resolution diagnostic ultrasound equipment we would perform on site demonstrations by driving special vans with a wheel chair lift so we could lower our 300 lbs of technology and roll it into the hospital or imaging center.
We used a company called "Auto Drive Away" to park the demo van in the airport so the application specialist and I could arrive by commercial air. We had a set keys, so the retired vet driver, would park it in short-term parking for us, and we would get off the plane, make the sale, and fly home. Many times the driver would get a motel room, and then drive our van to the next location.
My territory was the West and when we traveled to remote regions, this was a time saver and cost effective too.
So when David Sherman and I booked our demo at St. Joseph's Hospital in Eureka, California, we asked Pam to make the arrangements with Auto Drive Away. They were very reliable!
So David flew in from Seattle, and I from Sacramento, and to our shock, the van was no where in any remote parking of the Eureka Airport at 8 PM that night!
We quickly learned that our demo van was in "Yreka" and not Eureka! So we rented a car and drove through the beautiful Trinity Forest for 2 hours to get our van and then I drove the can and David drove the rental and around 1 AM we got into our hotel rooms.
We made the demo at 8AM. When driving through those gorgeous mountains, under all those stars, I am pretty sure we heard God laughing!
OK - one more quick one. River Gables was my dream luxury home on the South Fork of the American River in Coloma, California. About half way between Sacramento and Tahoe. The address was 2778 Amoloc Lane. For several weeks I asked everyone what is an "Amoloc" and my elderly neighbor answered the question with a look of "duh". "It is Coloma spelled backwards!
Racecar, Kayak, and rotator or other common palendromes.
