At the SETI Institute, every day brings us one step closer to understanding the enormous cosmos we're a part of. But we couldn't do this without friends like you. You’re an ally in our quest to answer the age-old question: Are we alone?
Thanks to the steadfast dedication of people like you, we've been able to get one step closer to answering that question. To illustrate, I’d like to share a story of our recent project at the Allen Telescope Array (ATA). In December of 2023, a team of SETI Institute scientists unveiled new insights into a cosmic mystery known as Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), using the unique capabilities of the refurbished ATA. Recent research reveals that these bursts originate from magnetars, highly magnetized neutron stars, suggesting a common source for FRBs.
This discovery advances our comprehension of extreme astrophysical phenomena and offers insights into the universe's magnetic field dynamics. Understanding FRBs could unlock the mysteries of dark matter, gravitational waves, and other cosmic puzzles, potentially reshaping our knowledge of fundamental physics. Moreover, harnessing FRBs may revolutionize communication and navigation technologies, enabling faster data transmission and more accurate positioning systems. This research not only enhances our understanding of the cosmos, but also holds promise for practical applications that could benefit humanity's technological advancement.
It’s a thrilling, transformative time for SETI Institute but, more importantly, for humanity.
As we look at what's next, we’re excited to continue our mission, and we need your help. Our dedicated monthly donors–SETI Stars–have been particularly instrumental to our success by backing new ideas, supporting existing programs, and making the unexpected possible. This is why we’re so thankful for their ongoing commitment, and we invite you to join the community.
If you’ve ever been fascinated by the mysteries of the universe, I invite you to become a SETI Star. Your monthly support will help fund breakthroughs, like the ones we just made in FRBs.
We hope you’ll join us!
Thank you,
Stephen Bourdow
Director of Development
Thank You SETI for letting visitors on vacation see your amazing technology! We used "phased array" technology with ultraasound to image the heart so your array (ATA) makes sense to me. Everyone who is visiting the area needs to take the time to visit SETI! Turn off your cellphones! Listen to the cosmos! Support this research and these wonderful people!
PS. We would welcome you to stay at Rocky Ledge Estates sometime soon!
